Started by three friends in Paris 60 years ago, Diptyque has become an iconic pillar of French fragrance, known for its instantly recognizable candles and scents that become signatures. Christiane Montadre-Gautrot, a graduate of l’Ecole des Arts Décoratifs, and Desmond Knox-Lee, a painter, met through friends of friends. Together they designed fabric and wallpaper for ultra-chic British maisons. Then, some friends introduced them to Yves Coueslant, who had escaped an unlikely career in banking to follow his heart and work in theatre . The three friends quickly became inseparable and in 1961, they opened an unusual boutique with a daring plan: listen to their intuition and only do what they love. Today, Diptyque expresses its singularity even when choosing its ingredients, hunting for only the noblest raw materials to create its works of art in the form of eau de toilettes, perfumes, candles, diffusers and objects for the home.

“At my very first job out of college, my boss gave me a Baies candle from Diptyque for the holidays and I have never felt chicer. That blackcurrant and rose combo, and their scents in general, have always felt like an aromatic shorthand for in-the-know elegance.” - Jamie Rosen, Wellbeing Editor
